Waterwalker Film Festival Winner

The 2010 Waterwalker Film Festival is pleased to announce the winning films in each of the following categories:




Best of the Festival - Finding Farley

Produced by The National Film Board of Canada

Follow filmmakers Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison along with their two-year-old son Zev as they trace the literary footsteps of an iconic Canadian author. Their 5,000 km journey has them paddling, portaging and sailing from the Prairies to the Maritimes where they finally meet up with Canadian author Farley Mowat.

Best Canoeing Film- This is Canoeing

This is Canoeing
is a collection of canoeing films that showcase some of the single blade's most talented paddlers, exploring wilderness and running challenging whitewater. The film features Becky Mason, Paul Mason, Kevin Callan, Mark Scriver, Andrew Westwood, Ray Goodwin, Wendy Grater and others.

Best Environmental Film- Terra Antarctica

Terra Antarctica explores the fast-changing evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula, which has been impacted by climate change. This National Geographic-sponsored exploration is a one-of-a-kind look at Antarctica from a unique perspective - sea level.

Best Adventure Film - Paddle to Seattle

Produced by J.J. Kelley and Ben Gottfried

Paddle to Seattle follows two adventurers on a 1,300-mile voyage in homebuilt kayaks for 97 days down the Inside Passage from Alaska through British Columbia to northern Washington.

Best Instructional Film - Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown

Produced by Simon Willis

This film features exciting, practical sea kayaking instruction from Gordon Brown, one of the world's top coaches. It guides kayakers through forward paddling, turning and steering and into rough water and tidal races. Beautifully filmed off the Isle of Skye.

Best Action Film - Let the Slave Run

The Slave River in the Northwest Territories offers world-class play spots, river running and even creeking. Let the Slave Run shows what four sets of rapids has to offer as well as making people aware that this unique river is under threat of being dammed.

Best Amateur Film - Armada

Twelve friends gather on the Upper Red Deer River in the Alberta foothills to end the summer with a weekend of whitewater canoeing. All are ready to "get their paddle on" and have a good time.

Symbiosis

Symbiosis features exquisite footage from numerous West Kootenay creeks that are threatened by controversial independent power projects (IPPs). A collective of concerned kayakers are raising awareness over hundreds of IPP applications in British Columbia. Viewers are led down a selection of creeks and canyons special to the West Kootenay region.

River Life

During an eight-day canoe trip in Northern Saskatchewan in the summer of 2009, nine paddlers traveled up the Chipman River from Black Lake to Selwyn Lake, which rests on the border between Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

Lucky 13

Like trying to catch a rattled rooster, Lucky 13 chases to keep up with a group of adrenalin-fused kayakers in search of a variety of whitewater features within their beloved West Kootenay playground. Compiling rare footage, and outtakes, Lucky 13 throws the dice at a dynamic selection of dubiously lucky paddling lines.

Tilt

In the wildest, wettest part of Alberta, where cattle still roam at large and tight wranglers are the norm, three teenagers dare to slip into even tighter neoprene and learn to wrangle the whitewater of the Red Deer River. From the Ya Ha Tinda to Sundre, they run solo under the instructive watch of Ryan Lemphers and Rob Cox.

International Whitewater Hall of Frame

The International Whitewater Hall of Fame has inducted its fifth class of outstanding contributors to the sport, business, lifestyle and environmental stewardship that define the whitewater community. The 2009 inductees hail from six different continents and are: Explorer Lars Holbech, Pioneer Mikhail Kolche Vnikov, Champions Stepanka Hilertova and Pavol and Peter Hochschorner as well as advocates Bill Mason and Rafael Gallo.

The 2010 Festival showcases films that push the creative edge in the paddling film genre.Since its inception over 22 years ago, the Festival has entertained and inspired paddling enthusiasts across North America. The festival tour includes both winners and other outstanding entrants.
