Program Overview
As an alternative to an Instructor course, Instructor candidates can obtain training, assessment, and certification through a process of mentorship that entails working on two appropriate courses.

Typically, during the first of two courses the Apprentice-Instructor participates as a helpful observer. Following successful participation in the first course the Apprentice-Instructor participates in a second course and undertakes greater leadership responsibilities. Upon completion of the second course, the Apprentice may earn the appropriate certification.

The Mentorship/Apprentice process acknowledges that practical experience is at least, if not better than classroom instruction. The knowledge, skill and judgement that are passed along during a mentorship is more than can be written down in a course outline. However is it essential that all mentorships are clearly described and well understood by the mentor and the apprentice.

Given the flexibility and personal nature of a mentorship it is important to assure that the process of training, assessment and certification will stand up to the scrutiny of other Instructor Trainers and the larger sea kayak community.

The success of the Mentor/Apprentice relationship is beneficial to both parties and the quality of training relies on mutual respect, cooperation and commitment to the overall process.

• Instructor Trainer(s) must provide the Participants a written outline of the duration and requirements for completing certification by means of mentorship.
• The Apprentice-Instructor must demonstrate all the skills and knowledge requirements as outlined for the comparable instructor course.
• The Apprentice must complete all assessment tasks as outlined in the instructor course including requirements for written examinations and submission of course outlines.
